Midphase consultation

Tutor: Tom
Today was critical as it was my last chance to show my design and service to tom. He found my power point presentation was well thought through and was displayed nicely. My main focus was to get the system map sorted as it is a vital part of the service design. Tom said it was good and well thought through. The consumer side was well detailed but he wanted almost the same amount of detail for the behind the scenes as the consumer side. this i will work on. It will be hard to fit this on one a3 page so i will see how this goes. I ran the design of the pods past Tom and we discussed material choice. root moulding PE and steel where the two choice. I have decided to go with Roto moulding as you can still get a quality finish and it will be much cheaper to produce and to maintain with gravity and cleaning. The large size of my pods was another issue which i have decided to explore. I am now going to split the pods up and connect them through a central spine which will house the air-conditioning unit and the central power source. Lots to do but looking forward to getting it all done.

Matt Patane and Alex Jackson:
I discussed my design with Matt and Alex with both of them asking about material choice and the large mass of the pods. With them i discussed the singular pods with the spine and they agreed it was a much better option. I also ran through my user interface with them and they made suggestions on how i could improve the layout and which steps things should appear in. this was very helpful.

Listening in to Mars conversations it seemed that most people had the same problems. These were that the service side was not up to standard on not thought through with the product and service they are addressing. From this though of some new way to continue the ongoing service that is needed for my pods. Especially the cleaning and maintenance and what that involves.

Reflection: project 2

Tutor: Tom
After presenting my powerpoint presentation and 3 concepts to Tom it was suggested that i focus on concept 2, The office/conference pod. After conversation the main topics that i need to cover are the
  • location: e.g Airport, onsite, public spaces, office block, In the city, out west, by the beach etc, well populated areas, high business traffic areas.
  • Profile / interface: Booking with app, live updates, SMS alerts, have a personal or company log in profile, location map showing where the pods are.
  • booking system: booking capabilities, online, app, live booking,
  • portability and size: How is it constructed? can it be taken apart? does it have to be lifter by a crane or fork lift? fit 5-10 people, be able to fit on a transport vehicle.
  • technology: interactive table and displays, screens, projectors, wifi, bluetooth, audio and visual recording/documentation, secure, private, air-conditioning, energy (generator or solar panels etc), Advertising on the out side.
  • maintenance: Service for technology, automatic alerts for broken system etc, servicing the out shell of the pod.
These are all things that we discussed that i need to do more research about. A great idea we discussed was having this pod being on a construction site so that builders, architects, engineers and the client can have seamless connectivity and collaborative meetings whether they are on site or out and about.
Another connective idea was to have the pods being able to connect with each other for example if you want to have a meeting with a client and they are in melbourne and you are in Sydney you can both find pods in melbourne and sydney and share files, conference etc as if you were in the same pod.

Peer: Christine Chau and Christina Le
The main point discussed with Christine and Christina was who is the target of the pod, the location of these pods, how are they transported and the size.
All of these points will have to be researched to find who will benefits from these.
Some suggestions were to make them fit on the back of a truck so they can be easily transported which is a very good idea to make as little on site assembly. The location was also discussed because if they are in a high populated business area they will benefit the most but will the pods always be occupied? this will be something to research.

Listening to Mars group was interesting because the group i listened to had no one doing the same brief as me. It was interesting because i could take different methodologies from other briefs and apply them to my research. For example listen to how Doug will approach his toilet design. Is it better to fully develop your service system or product first or both at the same time. I also pick up keys points which i forgot in my initial research like the on going maintenance need for the software and physical product.

overall great feed back from everyone. now to get stuck into research and some initial designs.
